This study aims to investigate ChatGPT’s competence in translating metaphors in the English-Arabic language pair. A qualitative analysis method was employed using Newmark’s metaphor classification and his suggested translation methods. Five metaphors’ translations were analyzed using Newmark’s classification. The results show that ChatGPT relied on literal translation to translate metaphors, even when more suitable, culturally appropriate equivalents were available. This AI’s limitation mainly stems from its reliance on its use of literal translation. Future research could delve into other language pairs as well as a bigger set of data.
