The Socio-Psychological Dimensions of Love in Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook

This study examines Nicholas Sparks’s The Notebook (1996) through Fromm’s theory of nature love within a socio-psychological framework. Employing a qualitative descriptive method and textual analysis, the research focuses on how the four dimensions of mature love—care, responsibility, respect, and knowledge—are represented through the character of Noah Calhoun and how these dimensions reflect broader sociological values. Data were collected through close reading and thematic coding of selected passages from the novel, supported by relevant psychological and sociological theories. The findings indicate that care is manifested through devotion and empathy, responsibility through moral commitment and consistency, respect through the acknowledgement of autonomy and freedom, and knowledge through emotional understanding and empathy. These dimensions reveal that love in The Notebook is portrayed not merely as an emotional experience but as a conscious moral practice that sustains interpersonal harmony and social cohesion. This study concludes that Sparks presents mature love as an evolving synthesis of psychological depth and sociological value, emphasising love as a deliberate act of empathy, responsibility, and ethical awareness.
